“I am deeply disturbed by reports of a shooting near George Florence Park this morning. West Berkeley has seen a terrifying uptick in gun violence over the past year. I empathize with community members who are losing patience with the violence erupting in our neighborhoods, threatening their households, and making parks, schools and streets unsafe.

Gun violence and the proliferation of illegal firearms are a menace. I’m working closely with the City Manager’s office and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence on an ordinance to prohibit untraceable ghost guns, and I’ve also worked with local civil rights leaders to introduce a budget referral for automated license plate readers in high-crime areas. We need to act quickly. Enough is enough.

If you or a loved one are experiencing violence in the community, please contact the violence prevention services of Voices Against Violence, and reach out to the Covenant Church on San Pablo Avenue.”
